When you are young fit and healthy, it is hard to plan for the day when that might not be the case but critical illness insurance is something that we all need to make provision for. Providing financial peace of mind for your family by taking out critical illness insurance, for a mere few dollars each week should something happen to you, does not to seem as important to most of us as having that extra, luxury cup of coffee every day during lunch.

As the majority of critical illness insurance products now cover common illnesses and given the statistical probability that you will be critically ill at some point, it is a good thing to have. Speaking of statistics, recently they have revealed that at least twenty percent of men will suffer from a critical illness before they retire. That same research also shows that women are only slightly less likely with a one in six chance, to be affected by a critical illness prior to retirement.

Possibly one of the main reasons for people not having critical illness insurance cover is a failure to understand the probability of becoming seriously ill. Although critical illness insurance is taken out for many reasons, the majority of people use it to protect their mortgage repayments. To enable continued payment of a mortgage, most mortgages can be set up to include protection policies that include critical illness insurance in addition to life cover.

To make things simpler for someone who wants to take out critical illness insurance, a growing number of people begin to start buying products online. Unfortunately, being a relatively new facility, there are new problems that occur as more companies start offering services over the Internet for the first time. This is because many companies who provide critical illness insurance wish to have the applicant take a medical examination by an independent physician to ensure there is nothing untoward right from the start. Strangely, although this sounds as if it is to the benefit of the insurance company, it also benefits the claimant as they will not want to have problems if they make a claim on their critical illness insurance policy at some stage.

One thing to consider though if decide to apply for a critical illness insurance policy is if you are a smoker, and that includes anyone who has smoked within the last year, you are looked upon as a higher risk applicant. It is now thoroughly recognized that smoking is dangerous for you and as a consequence your monthly insurance payment will cost more. Although this is an important factor to consider, there are others like your age, health, where you work, what activities you do and environment that your critical illness insurance provider will look at. Critical illness insurance will protect you if your condition is terminal or critical, you need certain surgery or if you become unemployed owing to the condition. The peace of mind that critical illness insurance and disability insurance can provide at such a time is priceless.
