Alzheimer's disease is now the most prevalent type of degenerative dementia amongst the elderly. With the diagnoses accuracy of Alzheimer's disease now up to 94% accurate, it is affecting approximately ten percent of people aged 65 and over, affecting the memory centers of the sufferer's brain.
Although it was first discovered in 1906 by a German physician by the name of Alois Alzheimer, Alzheimer's disease is still has many mysteries even though the world started to take it seriously over 30 years ago. Studies have shown that getting older is the main reason for contracting this degenerative disease. Unfortunately, the person experiencing the early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease will know something is wrong but won't admit it to others or even to themselves.
Although there are many areas of dementia, Alzheimer's treatment is the same as other degenerative brain disorders. However, there is no definitive Alzheimer's treatment at present, but some drugs improve the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or stall their progression. The mental abilities of an Alzheimer's disease sufferer can be improved anything up to six months with the use of the prescribed medication Donepezil, Tacrine, and Rivastigmine, drugs which have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
There is a new drug though based on the anti-influenza medication Amantadine, called Memantine, which seems to be slowing down the mental deterioration for those who are in the later stages of Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease sufferers prescribed Donepezil with up to including severe symptoms are now prescribed Memantine as well. Fortunately, Memantine has few side effects as 80% of it is passed in urine unchanged and so far it is the only drug that has proved to be of real benefit to patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's disease is considered to be a major public health challenge since the average age of the industrialized world's population is increasing and is now the fourth largest cause of death in America. That is not the only problem, the annual cost of treating and care for Alzheimer's disease sufferers is over billion. The National Institute on Aging, last year spent almost half of its annual budget on research into the causes and treatment of Alzheimer's. To show the global concern surrounding Alzheimer's disease, research is being carried out into over 300 compounds around the world, which may be effective in treating it.
One of the few factors that you can change yourself to alter your risk of developing Alzheimer's is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, researchers believe the happier and healthier someone with Alzheimer's disease is, the slower his or her decline. At the moment, the disease is still primarily and aging one but there have been incidences of early-onset Alzheimer's disease.
