Famous for their quality, aroma and flavor, Cuban cigars are renowned throughout the world. Indeed, they are so prized that many illegitimate dealers have been known to sell fake Cubans to unsuspecting cigar smokers. The best way to ensure you do not end up buying fakes is to purchase them from a legitimate dealer. There are legitimate sources out there to buy from such as mail order cigar suppliers or your local tobacconist.

If you are offered a box of Cuban cigars, you would be very wise to give the box a good examination first. Using that information, here are some facts about identifying the genuine cigars from the fakes you would do well to learn. If you look carefully at the box you will see a white and green warranty seal on the front left side of it plus a seal with a picture of a hat and shield in the form of an insignia and these will help distinguish a genuine Cuban cigar box. On the upper right hand corner of the box, you should find a white sticker that is placed diagonally with the word 'Habanos' printed on it.

Also watch out for a box that has any type of damage, printing smudges or if the box looks dull because it should be neat, clean and free from any marks. Using a heat stamp the word 'Habanos' can also be seen again; this is always found on the bottom of the cigar box. It is quite normal for fake Cuban cigar boxes to have a printed paper label stuck on or a rubber stamp impression to try and forge this imprint. As an additional precaution, every box has a factory security code indicated in black, blue or green ink which informs the purchaser, when and where the cigars were rolled.

It is worth checking the cigars as well because damage may have occurred in transit. Dedicated cigar smokers will recognize the deep rich aroma which an unmistakable sign of a Cuban cigar. A box of authentic Cuban cigars will not have a weak or indistinct aroma so if you find yourself with a box of cigars like this they are almost certainly fakes. The top row of cigars may also appear slightly flatter than the rest but they should all be facing the same way.

The foot of each cigar should have been cut cleanly plus the caps and bands, identical. If it is possible, try to feel the cigars as they should be firm and pliable without any hard or soft areas. There are many factors to distinguish a real Cuban cigar but if you are a dedicated cigar lover, the last thing you would want is a fake box.
