A worrying aspect of sexual health in recent years is genital warts which can grow in and around male and female sex organs; these can form into ugly groups that can even affect the anal area. These belong to the same strain of human papillomavirus that result in other types but are easily passed from one person to another, even orally. The problem comes when you try to prevent contracting them as in the case of female genital warts, the woman may have them internally and unless she has recently undergone an examination, she may not know they are there; even using a condom is not guaranteed to stop the spread.

What makes it worse is they can lie dormant for years at a time and it may not be possible to know who infected you in the first place.Tracking down the carrier is problematic and of no use because it will be carried by every new person infected. There is large number of viruses, over one hundred in fact but it is the HPV6 strain that is responsible for ano-genital warts. Often, these warts are passed on by women who have them located inside their vagina and are unaware they are there; only being found when they attend a clinic or see their gynecologist.

Genital warts often cause the area around them to become damp and this is an environment which aids their multiplication and can cause some discharge when located inside or around a woman's vagina. The most popular treatment for wart removal is the use of liquid nitrogen which is applied at very low temperatures but a number of applications are usually required before it can be safely removed. This is carried out by doctors because liquid nitrogen is not generally available to the general population but the process is not a very painful procedure and whether liquid nitrogen is used depends upon the location.

Two other methods which require professional medical attention is the use of electro-cautery or the emerging laser wart removal process. All the treatments depend upon the location of the infection and even after they are removed, there is no guarantee they will not come up again. One treatment that is relatively successful at removing genital warts is imiquimod as it helps fight the virus but new ones can still appear while it is being administered.

Unfortunately imiquimod cannot always be used and in particular it is not to be administered when a woman is pregnant, this is also the case when the skin around the area is inflamed and in particular, internally. This is a strong substance that has side-effects like many medications so someone using imiquimod needs to look out for coughs, blistering, aches all over and an itching in the genital region; a doctor would be able to elaborate on this. This article has been provide to supply general information on genital warts only and does not try to bypass professional medical advice which should be sought from your doctor or dermatologist.
