1. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that does not allow processed food to be converted into energy or growth properly. Once converted by the digestive system, food is transformed into different acids, enzymes, prtoeins and glucose, which is then used by our metabolism for energy.
2. As the fastest-acting source of fuel for the body, glucose must get to where it is needed but diabetes interferes with the normal process. The health risks are the direct result of a build up of glucose in the blood instead of it being transported directly to cells to provide energy.
3. This condition comes in two forms, type I and type II, but only brief details are given here. Further information should be sought from a medical professional if you think you have this condition.
4. The first type is called type one and usually affects young people; called juvenile onset diabetes, it is where the body completely stops the production of insulin; symptoms include excessive thirst, weight loss and fatigue. The breath is affected as is the urine (excess sugar). Insulin must be given to the diabetic on a daily basis for them to live along with frequent monitoring of blood glucose levels. Insulin is used by the body to regulate the amount of glucose the blood contains.
5. The other type of diabetes (type 2 or late onset) is not quite so severe; this type happens when not enough insulin is being produced or it isn't being used properly. There may be no symptoms of type II diabetes but it is still harmful if left untreated. It can usually be corrected through diet. The alarming news is that Type II diabetes is so prevalent now in children; with good nutrition and exercise it is preventable.
6. Our body needs energy which it obtains from food that it converts into sugar. Junk foods contain more of the simple carbohydrates; we need carbohydrates in a balanced diet, but the best are the complex carbohydrates.
7. Good diabetes care and management can prevent or delay the onset of these complications; a number of the conditions will actually get better while others will be slowed down. Managing this condition means changing your lifestyle to correct the problem.
8. Stable weight is a requirement that will help ensure your blood pressure is also maintained at a healthy level. Type I Diabetes cannot be cured and once diagnosed it is a lifelong complaint; currently approx 2.6 percent of the U.S. population or about 5.5 million Americans are known to have this health problem; it is known that six hundred thousand new cases of will be diagnosed this and every year.
9. Official figures show that diabetes causes the death of over thirty four thousand people in America every year and is indirectly responsible for over 300,000 more deaths per year. Complications include visual impairment, kidney problems, impotence, and more. Diabetics often encounter neuropathy and insufficient oxygenation to the limbs, which can result in amputation.
