Normally, food equals fuel, which equals energy. A large part of the result of digestion is the production of glucose, which is rapidly delivered to our bodies' cells. Glucose is vital to our survival; without it brain damage can occur in minutes. But too much glucose (diabetes) is actually much more common. It is in two categories: Type I and type II diabetes.

The natural digestive process employed by the body is impaired due to an inefficiency in the pancreas; without enough insulin to regulate it, glucose levels rise and can cause serious health problems.

Mainly affecting children and young adults, type 1 or juvenile-onset diabetes occurs when insulin production stops completely; symptoms include excessive thirst, weight loss, fatigue and possible coma; urine has a sweet odor. Daily injections of insulin are needed to control the high levels of glucose and blood-glucose monitoring is life-long to attempt to balance glucose levels.

Adult onset diabetes is now called Type II diabetes; it used to occur later in life and thus was known as "adult onset", but there has been an alarming surge due to childhood obesity and inactivity (of epidemic proportions). Type II diabetes can be resolved with good nutrition and weight loss; educating yourself is key.

Over time, diabetes can cause heart disease, kidney problems visual impairment, impotence, and limb amputation. Diabetic neuropathy causes people not to be able to feel their extremities, and with feet encased in socks and shoes and bearing weight, are much more likely to develop problems. There are important things you need to know about good diabetic foot care.
